Dear Editor,
I was on the interview panel that hired Russom Mesfun as principal of Britton Middle School. I was amazed at his energy, enthusiasm and love of children. I have never been in the presence of someone who cares so deeply and passionately about his students.
Students frustrated and scared often times go directly to the principal. He receives them with assurance and provides them with guidance and respect. He prefers to visit classrooms and walk the hallways to make sure the school is safe rather than sit idly by. He is a hard working hard driven man that believes the students of Britton Middle School should receive the best education possible.
Students are called to the office to celebrate their victories, their birthdays and their achievements. Twenty students are randomly chosen each month to have a pizza lunch with the principal. The principal listens to the issues the students bring up and they strategize on ways to improve their school. All comments by students are kept confidential. The students enjoy these lunches and are appreciative because their voices are heard.
Mr. Mesfun writes a monthly staff memo filled with kudos and appreciation for staff members who are doing a good job. He recognizes staff members who are quietly working behind the scenes. He appreciates the job they are doing and is very vocal about it. It was the principal’s idea to give gifts of appreciation to teachers at every staff meeting.
It is very important for him to return all phone calls, even if it means he will do it after hours. He greets all visitors at Britton with kindness and consideration. I have seen him receive gifts of appreciation, cards and e-mails from parents who believe in his vision and appreciate what he is doing for the school and their children.
Mr. Mesfun will be greatly missed by his students, parents and staff.
Christy Thompson, Morgan Hill
Britton Middle School Secretary
