El Toro Youth Center Holds Computer Fixit Fair
El Toro Youth Center, a Community Solutions program that provides after-school services, will offer low-income families the opportunity to repair or upgrade their computers on Jan. 27, 1pm-5pm. The Computer Fixit Fair is free and open to the public, but priority will be given to families who have taken part in El Toro Youth Center’s courses or reside at the Gilroy Garden Apartments.
Upon registration, families will receive a brief orientation and an assessment to determine their technology needs. With the assistance of trained computer technicians, families will be able to select from new and/or used computer components and fix their computers. Hard drives, floppies, memory, sound cards, and other hardware will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Assistance with the installation of previously purchased software can also be provided. All participants will be required to sign a release of liability form prior to working on their computer.
The Computer Fixit Fair is an annual event of El Toro Youth Center’s Computer Literacy and Technology Program that offers low-income youth and their parents technology training and job preparation courses. The program is designed to give families, who would otherwise have limited or no exposure to technology, enhanced opportunities for academic achievement and career advancement. This project has been made possible in part by a grant from Microsoft Unlimited Potential – Silicon Valley at Community Foundation Silicon Valley. Over the past several years, funding from Microsoft has played a significant role in furthering numerous local low-income families’ potential for greater economic stability.
El Toro Youth Center is located at 17620 Crest Avenue, Morgan Hill. For more information about the Computer Fixit Fair, please call (408) 779-6002.
Color Guard Competition at Live Oak High School Saturday
The Live Oak Emerald Regime Marching Band and Color Guard will host its annual Winter Guard Emerald Regime Invitational on Jan. 27.
The competition will be held Saturday from 3pm-8:30pm. The Emerald Regime competes at 4:58pm, Gilroy High School performs at 3:14pm and San Benito High school performs at 4:10pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door, and the event is being held in the main gymnasium at Live Oak High School.
The Emerald Regime with its fine tradition and competitive excellence is the oldest consistently competitive scholastic color guard in the California Color Guard Circuit for the Northern California region. This year’s show promises to provide an exciting afternoon and evening of color guard activity with 30 guard units from all over the bay area, including the two current World Champions, Logan High School and the Raiders World Guard, an independent unit from San Jose. Also included in the event are guards from DCI’s Santa Clara Vanguard and the Concord Blue Devils.
In this context, the term “Color Guard” traditionally refers to a unit that combines movement, flags, simulated rifles, sabers and other such props that provide color to a marching band, enhancing the visual appeal and excitement of a show.
The Morgan Hill community continues to be wonderfully supportive of the program here at Live Oak High through support of fund raisers throughout the year. Emerald Regime Guard director Tara Martinez is in her first year at Live Oak and has brought years of experience in championship guards with her to Live Oak. The guard has worked very hard, spending hundreds of hours after school, evenings and weekends practicing and developing a terrific show and promises a moving program based on the music, “It’s Not Easy Being Green.”
