With Small Roster, LO falls to Grizzlies. Sobrato wrestlers take
down Leigh 49-19
Live Oak vs. Gunderson
Although Live Oak has competed shorthanded this season, the Acorns have shown the ability to consistently compete with their opponents even with a disadvantage because forfeits.
That was the case last Thursday when Live Oak fell 39-30 to Gunderson. The Acorns had some impressive individual showings that kep them in the match with the Grizzlies.
The Acorns got wins from Brett Jones (160) Myloe Esquival (171) and Kenny Lee (125). Perhaps Live Oak’s most inspiring performance of the match came in defeat from Steven Hernadez, who took Carlos Carrasco, the 17th-ranked wrestler in the Central Coast Section, to the limit before falling in overtime.
The Acorns are currently 1-3 in league this year but have experienced some success individually throughout the year. Without having a full roster the Acorns have managed to put points on the board; but as the season progressed the team has focused more on the things that they can control such as individual development rather than the outcome of the duel meets.
“We aren’t a very good duel team due to the fact that we give up so many points without having a big lineup so we focus on individual matchups,” said coach Robert Fernandez.
Still, the Acorns have done reasonably well in their duel meets and are looking forward to competing in the CCS Championships, Fernandez said.
“That is the beautiful thing about wrestling,” Fernandez said. “It is an individual sport. I think our boys will do well in CCS and I am looking forward to seeing how they compete.”
Sobrato vs. Leigh
In Thursday’s Blossom Valley Athletic League match against Leigh the Sobrato wrestling team bolstered a strong lineup that overwhelmed Leigh winning convincingly 49-19.
