The need for a drink and a smoke could have driven a man to pull out a steak knife and rob the Valero gas station on Monterey Road early Tuesday morning, driving away with an undisclosed amount of cash and the desired commodities.

The station’s clerk described the suspect as a Hispanic man in his 30s, approximately 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

According to Morgan Hill police Cmdr. David Swing, the man entered the Valero gas station at 14660 Monterey Road at approximately 1:30 a.m. and brought a 24-ounce Bud Light to the register and acted as if he would pay for it.

As the clerk began to ring up the beer, the man moved around to her side of the counter and placed the knife against her ribs, Swing said. He then began making demands in Spanish, but she couldn’t understand him, so she raised her hands and moved away from the register. She told police the suspect then began randomly punching keys on the cash register until the drawer opened.

The man then took the cash, the two packs of cigarettes and the beer and left the store. The clerk told police the man left the gas station headed south on Monterey Road in a white compact pickup with a black primer passenger door.

Anyone with information about the suspect or the vehicle he was seen driving is asked to contact Morgan Hill police Det. Rod Krewson at (408) 776-7323.
