Local gymnasts from Champions Academy in Morgan Hill were successful at recent state meets, winning multiple medals.
Josh Dixon, Level 10, won the state title, with an all-around score of 53.20. In addition, he took 1st on floor, 2nd on pommel, vault, parallel bars and high bar. Jeremy Johnson, Level 10, was the state champion on floor in his division and finished seventh all-around. In the Level 6 division, Gregory Grattan took 3rd on floor and pommel.
Additionally, Dixon, Johnson, Grattan, Max Glynn, Nolan Beck and Matthew Schaupp all qualified for the Region 1 Championships to be held in April in Hawaii, which will feature gymnasts from Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada and California.
On the girls side, Danae Shemansky was successful at the Level 7 State Championships, taking third on vault, third on bars and fifth all-around with a score of 37.325. Parisa Loftis took third on beam with a score of 9.4.
Youth Bowlers Rolling Over Their Averages
It was quite a week for the youth bowlers in the Saturday Junior and Bumper Leagues as everyone topped their averages.
In the Junior league, Nick McFarland had the high game and series of the week, rolling a 158/432. Matt Jackson was right behind with a 144/410. Tom Wada bowled 57 pins over his average, taking the high handicap game (198) and also grabbing the high handicap series ending with a 535.
Other junior highlights for handicap series included Koll Wada 466, Evan Loo 460, Michael Liesdorf 456 and Kevin Hartman 415.
In the Bumper Division, Dominick Padilla rolled 18 pins over his average for a nice 101 game, taking the high game spot this week. Ben Donn had the high series, finishing with a 176. Other high rollers were Andrew Bauer 77/151, Christian Duran 74/148, Damon Padilla 76/143 and Ariel Shelly 75/137.
