Morgan Hill – Beginning August 2007 a new era in golf will be ushered into the Silicon Valley, specifically Morgan Hill.
Inspired by the concept of the NBA, NFL and NHL, the National Golf League (NGL) is a new and innovative golf league comprised of professional teams playing in regional divisions.
The team representing the South Valley will be the Silicon Valley Drivers, which are one of six teams in the NGL Northern California division.
The Drivers have chosen their home course to be Coyote Creek Golf Club in Morgan Hill.
The players on the team roster are some the best golfers in the Silicon Valley region, who hold several course records among them, have won various professional events, and have participated in prestigious PGA events including the U.S. Open.
Several players are striving to earn their PGA Tour card, and view the NGL as an additional venue to gain high level competitive experience.
Looking for the type of enthusiasm in the Phoenix FBR Open and the Ryder Cup, the NGL has completed its first two seasons in California with great success.
Beginning in 2005 in Northern California, the NGL expanded in 2006 to Southern California and again in 2007 by establishing an Arizona/Las Vegas division.
This brings the total number of teams to 18 as there are 6 in each division. Expansion plans in 2008 include Florida, and further expansion locations across the country are being evaluated.Â
The NGL takes the intense competitive nature of team golf to the next level by creating a new kind of atmosphere for golf fans.
This new environment combines the demand for respect of the game while encouraging fan emotion and outward enthusiasm, especially on the 9th hole where an arena type feel and extra points make this the gathering spot for fans to cheer for their new team.
There are no ropes and fans can walk the fairways and get up close with the players as well as actively cheer for their team.
The team based format allows the players to be more relaxed and the scoring system encourages aggressive play which fans want to see.
The idea of “team play” is hoped to enhance the game of golf with new strategies and improved coaching technique, as well as establish new rivalries that mirror other sports.
Drivers team owner Bob Henderson is excited to bring the NGL and the Drivers to Morgan Hill.
“I am very confident that anyone who come to watch the NGL will be very impressed with the quality of golf and have a great time as well,” Henderson said.
The Drivers are hosting the 2007 NGL season opener on Saturday, August 4th and will be providing further information.
