Morgan Hill – The Blossom Valley Athletic League has released the final standings for the Best of the Best competition.

The BVAL is comprised of 24 schools divided into three divisions of eight based on strength of team and program.

For the competition, points are awarded by placement in division standings in each sport. The top division (Mt. Hamilton) champion receives 24 points, second place receives 23 points, all the way down to one point for the eighth place team in the lowest (West Valley) division.

Bonus points are awarded for division championships and positive sportsmanship.

Leland High School has once again finished first for the second consecutive year with 481 points.

Live Oak finished in seventh place with 360 points, while Sobrato finished in 17th with 216 points. Santa Teresa High School was the most improved winner and Leigh High School won the sportsmanship award.

“The Blossom Valley Athletic League has a strong reputation as a very competitive league. To finish in the top third of the Best of the Best standings in our first year in the league is quite an accomplishment. Moving into the league we weren’t sure how we would do, but obviously we held our own and were very competitive in most sports” Live Oak Athletic Director Mark Cummins said.

Live Oak Water Polo and Swimming Coach Mack Haines was equally enthused about Live Oak’s ranking.

“Although we are small in numbers enrollment wise (fifth smallest in league) we were able to continue our strong tradition of athletic and academic excellence,” Haines said. “Currently and over the last ten years we have produced quality student-athletes that have earned scholarships to colleges such as Cal, Stanford, USF, UCSB, UOP, San Diego State, UCLA, and Santa Clara to name a few.”

Haines attributes the student’s success to the quality coaching at Live Oak.

“Our veteran coaching staff does a tremendous job of preparing our student-athletes for pursuing excellence in all aspects of life,” Haines said.
