LIVE OAK HIGH SCHOOL SOPHOMORE CORA LARSON is the winner of this year’s Independence Day, Inc.’s annual t-shirt and program cover design contest.

IDI is the non-profit group that orchestrates Morgan Hill’s Fourth of July festivities. The organization sponsors the contest to encourage civic participation from local young artists. Art departments from local middle and high schools are invited to participate by submitting original artwork incorporating the year’s theme. This year’s theme was “America: Land of Hope and Freedom.”

Twenty five pieces of artwork were submitted by the schools this year. A panel of judges was assembled to vote on the winning design. Cora plans to pursue a career in film making. She will receive a $100 savings bond, a t-shirt, recognition at the July 3 Street Dance, an opportunity to ride in the parade, have her art work matted and framed by Fast Frame, and her work will appear on t-shirts and program covers for this year’s event.

Taylor Rush, an eighth grader at Carden Academy, won second place, and Catherine Bassett, a seventh grader at Martin Murphy Middle School, took third-place honors.

The entered artwork will be on exhibit in the Diana Murphy Room at the Morgan Hill Cultural and Community Center May 2-30. The winning design will be on display next to the information desk until the end of June.
