$33,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds available
through Feb. 9
Morgan Hill – Local nonprofits are taking a 76 percent cut in funding during fiscal year 2007-08 in distribution of Community Development Block Grants.
Last fiscal year, area human service providers received $141,000 in grants, but this year they face a $108,000 reduction to a meager $33,000. They have until Feb. 9 to apply for the federal money. During the 2005-06 fiscal year, 169,000 was disbursed.
The Community Development Block Grant program was established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in 1974 to provide communities with money for redevelopment and revitalization.
It is administered by the city in conjunction with Santa Clara County.
The grants provide funding for programs that benefit low-income residents and provide housing, job training, healthcare, senior programs and other social services. There are also grants for programs that eradicate slums or urban blight.
Services that have received funding in the past include La Isla Pacifica Women’s Shelter for battered women and the now-closed South Valley Dayworker Service Center.
