Anthony Goularte was surprised when he learned his company was one of the recipients of Gavilan College’s 2005 Community Spirit Awards. His company, Associated Concrete, was established in Morgan Hill in 1958, by Goularte’s parents, Tony and Eva.

“My parents were very generous people and taught us to help others,” he said. “We’re a small business in the community and try to do our small part to make the community a better place to live.”

Associated Concrete sells concrete around the South County area and has 50 employees. Goularte, who is vice president of the company, has been with the company since he graduated with a business degree from San Jose State University in 1976.

Goularte and his company were nominated for the award for their donations of concrete, money, and at times, Goularte’s own labor to build playgrounds, women’s shelters, hang flags and Christmas decorations downtown. The company has also supported the “Spirit of Morgan Hill,” ChildSpree, and other community events.

Goularte has also been a member of the Kiwanis Club since 1979. He said his involvement in Kiwanis shows him the needs in the community.

“I take it to another level and try to help from a personal level,” said Goularte.

Expressing his thanks for the Gavilan award, Goularte said, “We’re just a small part of the community and try to do our part,” said Goularte. “We don’t do it to be recognized. We’re fortunate to be in a position to help others and try to do what we can do.”
