Dear Editor,
As a former student of Live Oak High School through the year 2004, I have had the privilege of getting to know Glenn Webb and experience first-hand the hard work put in to having a respectable high school. These past few months have created great turmoil for the former Live Oak head football coach, with a lot of negative feedback coming from his letter regarding Sobrato High’s last-minute pullout from TCAL.
Though the issue is far behind us, I find it disgraceful that there has been so much bitterness toward Webb. He is not only a proud and respectable man, but an influence that should be credited by our community. Recent letters to the editor have shown that many people, especially those with kids going to Sobrato, do not approve of his thoughts.
I don’t think it is necessary nor appropriate to respond to those letters exclusively, although heaving read someone refer to Webb as having created a “war zone for our kids” made me chuckle at its lack of credibility.
Bizarre accusations like that would make a better Sunday morning comic strip than an opinion from a “concerned parent.” Despite such humor, most of the letters claim Webb is not concerned with the safety of the athletes, which is allegedly the true reason for Sobrato’s withdrawal from TCAL.
They accuse Webb of criticizing Sobrato, and I think it is obvious that he was. However, no one seems to address what exactly he was criticizing. Comments are flowing left and right saying that he is creating a damaging view of Sobrato, but they never address what he says.
Webb is a great individual who has vast knowledge of what goes on in the community. He addresses Sobrato’s withdrawal and the image it created of Live Oak’s program. He cites the reasons Sobrato principal Richard Knapp gave for the actions it took, then rebuts them with reasons specific to those addressed.
Parents of Sobrato High School students are refuting those statements from Webb by talking of how Sobrato is “safe,” which has nothing to do with Webb’s letter. He never said Sobrato was unsafe and the way he has been portrayed is not only shameful, but discrediting to this smart, honorable and respectable individual who Live Oak is lucky enough to have.
