Dear Editor,

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that 65 percent of American adults are overweight or obese.

To help improve health and control weight, the CDC and the U.S. Surgeon General recommend 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five days a week. How should American’s get this physical activity? Try bicycling to work. A 130-pound cyclist burns about 402 calories while pedaling 14 mph. A 180-pound cyclist burns about 540 calories while pedaling 14 mph.

On behalf of the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, I’m writing to encourage readers to keep Santa Clara County healthy by bicycling for short trips to work and for errands. You will stay healthy, lower pollution levels and you will save cash by avoiding the increasing gas prices.

If you haven’t ridden your bike in a while, the perfect occasion is coming up. Thursday, May 19, is the Bay Area’s official Bike to Work Day. In Santa Clara County we are planning to have over 45 Energizer Stations set up along commute routes to give away free Bike to Work Day bags and to thank people for taking the bike commute.

In the Bay Area, expect to see 50,000 to 100,000 participants riding to work on Bike to Work Day. If it’s too far for you to bike all the way to work, try bicycling to transit. For more information, or to register for the event, please visit www.511.org. Take the summer fun commute. See you cycling!
