San Jose named 10th largest U.S. city
The population of Morgan Hill has climbed to 34,885 people, an increase of slightly more than 700 people over the last year according to the latest figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau Thursday.

“That is a reasonable number, figure that is equivalent to 250 new homes, which is consistent with Measure C and Measure P,” Mayor Dennis Kennedy said. “It is not unexpected. Those numbers would have been a lot higher had Measure C and Measure P not been in place. I think we are doing a good job at growing at a rate we can accommodate.”

The increase follows a three-year trend in population growth for the city. Between 2002 and 2003, the city lost a little more than 300 residents.

Morgan Hill’s population growth coincides with the City of San Jose breaking into the largest 10 cities in the United States this year.

With an estimated population of 904,522 people, San Jose climbed above the Motor City, Detroit, for the No. 10 spot this year after Detroit showed an estimated population loss of more than 12,000 people from 2003 to 2004. San Jose grew by about 7,000 people according to census figures released this week.

San Francisco ranked 14th with a population estimate of 744,230. Other California cities also in the top 10 are Los Angeles, No. 2 with 3,845,541 people, and San Diego, No. 7 with 1,263,756 people. The next largest city in the state is Fresno, No. 47 with 457,719 people, followed by Sacramento, No. 48 with 454,330 people. New York city remained the undisputed population capital in the U.S. with 8,104,079 people.

According to the census report, the U.S. has 251 cities with populations over 100,000. The smallest of which is the Bay Area’s Daly City with a population 100,620.
