The Oakwood boys basketball team improved its record to 21-2 overall and 9-0 in league play, Wednesday, by defeating visiting York High School, 84-24.
Oakwood played flawlessly on offense and on defense as they took a commanding half time lead of 57-14 and never looked back.
Junior Nate Schilling was he hit 7 out of 8 shots from the three-point line. He finished the game with 25 points, six assists and four steals. Freshman Youssef Eshra had a great floor game as he finished with 24 points, six assists and two steals. Junior Justin Mortensen added five blocked shots to key the defense.
Oakwood also received strong all-around play from Zac Jenkins, Jonathan Angulo, Evan Richards, Miles Batey, Ben Millward, Will Molenkamp and Vijay Singh.
Oakwood has all five of their starters averaging more than 10 points per game this season. Eshra averages 20.7 points, 8.3 assists and 5.4 steals per game. Jenkins averages 16.3 points, nine rebounds and 1.9 steals per game. Schilling averages 16.2 points, 5.3 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game. Mortensen averages 14 points, 10.6 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game. Angulo averages 11.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.3 steals per game.
Key reserves, Batey averages 7.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game and Freshman Richards averages 4.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.
Coach Kort believes that this young Hawk team is one of the best high school defensive teams he has seen in his 30-plus years of coaching.
York came in to this game averaging nearly 50 points per contest, yet they could not find a way to attack or score against Oakwood’s defense.
Kort is so very proud of the Oakwood Hawks Boys Junior Varsity Basketball Team too.
This amazing group has had a great season and the future of the Oakwood Boys Basketball program is in great shape, he said.
The Oakwood girls team will be competing in its second consecutive CCS playoffs.
Both of these teams are made up of nearly all freshman and sophomores, just like the boys varsity roster.
