Dear Editor,
I was truly touched by Martin Cheek’s article on Ramadan published Oct. 26 and titled “A Holy Month.” It is rare in this post-Sept. 11 world to read anything in the media written with respect or sincerity toward Islam or Muslims.
The article was indeed refreshing and heart-warming at the same time.
I’d like to thank Mr. Cheek and The Times on behalf of the Muslim community in the Bay Area for sacrificing a day in your busy life to find the beauty of the faith as seen by its devotees and presenting it so others may understand the hearts and lives of typical Muslims.
As a Muslim writer who has written on the experiences of people of other faiths, I understand the extent of empathy and open-mindedness that is needed on the part of the writer to approach an alien culture and understand it, or in your case, admirably emulate and even practice it.
May your efforts encourage Bay Area residents to have appreciation toward each other’s cultures and communities in our multi-color and multi-cultural world.
Azleena Azhar, Fremont
