Months after Superintendent Carolyn McKennan decided not to seek renewal of her contract, Morgan Hill School District trustees are beginning to discuss how they will find her replacement. McKennan’s contract expires June 30.

The discussion concerning her replacement that took place during Monday’s board meeting was just that, a discussion; no action was taken.

Trustee Shellé Thomas said she had a concern about being too specific now with three new board members being seated in December.

“With the new board coming on and people leaving, how does that work,” she asked. “Does the old board lay the groundwork and the new people will review it?”

“I think we could send out a RFP (request for proposal) for search firms,” Trustee Del Foster answered. “We need to talk about what we think are important processes … We don’t have to make a final decision yet.”

McKennan said there is still enough time to find a successor.

Trustee Mike Hickey asked how long the process typically takes.

“It depends on how elongated you want the process to be,” said McKennan. “It can take several months to complete. You can fast forward it if necessary.”

Board President George Panos said he and Hickey had attended a workshop on the subject during the most recent California School Board Association conference.

“There is a period of time … known as ‘hunting season,” he said. McKennan agreed.

“That time is now,” she said. “(A new superintendent would) typically come on board July 1, so it’s a logical time…”
