Morgan Hill’s once-a-year City Beautification Day was on Saturday, May 15. Anthony Eulo in his May 11 Eco-Notes column in The Times invited the public to join in the cleaning up a collection of trash along the road. Most, but not all, Morgan Hill residents do “drive around and see something that just does not look right.”

Granted that, “the city’s resources aren’t adequate to keep the city entirely litter free …” there is a site that, if not presently is one, is a potential health hazard as a breeding source for rats and mosquito-borne diseases.

The property, in particular, is located on East Dunne Avenue between Pine Tree Villas and the LDS (Morman Church). Over time, the property has accumulated so much trash that it is now a dump. The owner of the property and residents living there seemingly exhibit a blatant disrespect for their neighbors by adding weekly to the trash piles.

I was given to understand that residents of Pine Tree Villas have complained to the City Council about the conditions but were informed that the city has no jurisdiction over that property. Why not?

If this is correct, City Council is obligated to contact Santa Clara County Vector Control and Santa Clara County Department of Health so that the owner of the property (Santa Clara County Recorder of Deeds) is cited for violations of county health codes.

Should there ever be a case of a mosquito-borne disease, and Santa Clara County Vector Control tests confirm that the source of the mosquito is from that property, it would not be surprising if there is a lawsuit against the City of Morgan Hill.

Perhaps Anthony Eulo will not welcome these comments and questions. I and several other concerned Morgan Hill residents would welcome his comments to this letter.
