Dear Editor,

About 18 years ago, I adopted a puppy from the San Martin Animal Shelter. A week later she was diagnosed with distemper and had to be put down. I vowed never to go into the shelter again.

Three months ago my daughter convinced me to go down with her and volunteer. The transformation amazed me. What I saw now was promise, clean cages, vaccinated animals and a caring helpful staff.

What the staff, FOSMAS (Friends of the San Martin Animal Shelter) and volunteers have done for the place is nothing short of a miracle.

Because of the hard work of everyone involved, 64 percent of the animals are adopted back into the community.

We decided to foster a litter of five kittens until they were old enough to be put up for adoption. When problems arose, I was happy to see that volunteers and staff went above and beyond in advice, medication and words of encouragement.

With love and handling, we turned the litter from wild, frightened kittens into cuddly “monsters” that were adopted within a week of their return.

We were proud of our small success, but even prouder of all the people who made it possible to keep our shelter open an additional day a week. Thank you all.

I would also like to thank Don Gage and Greg Van Wassenhove for listening to their constituency who realize what a shining star our small animal shelter is.
