Oakwood girls rally to remain perfect
A slow start in Wednesday’s game against Pacific Collegiate didn’t hamper the Oakwood girls basketball team’s efforts to remain perfect in league play.
The Hawks improved to 6-0 in the Coastal Division thanks to a 50-36 win that required Oakwood to erase a nine-point first quarter deficit.
Oakwood responded to being down 15-6 by outscoring PCS 15-2 in the second quarter and 16-5 in the third quarter.
Janine Bautista led the charge with 13 points, six assists and three steals.
Latai Saulala followed with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Peti Saulala added 10 points, three rebounds and four assists.
Oakwood will next travel to Kirby Prep Feb. 10 for a 6:30 p.m. game.
Oakwood boys basketball wins 17th straight league game
The Oakwood boys basketball team won its 17th straight Coastal Division game Wednesday, taking down Pacific Collegiate 71-35.
The Hawks haven’t lost a game dating back to Feb. 7, 2013 when they fell to Trinity Christian.
Those two schools will collide 5:30 p.m. Friday on Oakwood’s senior night. Festivities start at 5 p.m. and seniors from both the boys and girls teams plus spring sports teams will be honored.
Meanwhile, Oakwood’s magic number to clinch the division is down to four as the Hawks maintained a one-game lead over Anzar who was idol since playing PCS on Jan. 30.
Oakwood still has to play the bottom half of the division before hosting Anzar in a rematch to close out the season Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m.
Sobrato boys basketball drops ninth-straight
The Sobrato boys basketball team’s skid increased to nine games on Wednesday, falling to Andrew Hill 59-36.
The Bulldogs fall to 2-15 overall and 0-9 in Santa Teresa Division play.
Hill, meanwhile, improves to 8-9 overall and 4-5 in league play.
Hill took a 12-8 lead after the first quarter and increased it to nine at the half to start the third quarter up 30-21.
But the Falcons poured it on in the second half, outscoring the Bulldogs 29-15.
Armando Huerta led the charge with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Andy Tran followed with 13 points and Ricky Simmons added six points and 11 boards.
Sobrato will hit the road Friday to take on Westmont at 7 p.m.
Two second half goals send Santa Teresa over Live Oak girls
The Live Oak girls soccer team saw two second half goals go in for Santa Teresa to fall 3-1 on Wednesday.
The Acorns fall to 7-6-2 overall and 1-6-2 in Mt. Hamilton Division play.
Bella Apolinar had Live Oak’s lone goal, which she scored in the second half off an assist from keeper Dakota White.
The Saints went up 1-0 in the first half and added two more to preserve the win.
Live Oak will next take on Piedmont Hills on Friday on the road. Live Oak’s lone win of the season came against the Pirates back on Jan. 14.
