The Live Oak Emerald Regime Marching Band and Color Guard will
host its annual Emerald Regime Invitational Winter Guard
Competition on Saturday, Jan. 29.
The Live Oak Emerald Regime Marching Band and Color Guard will host its annual Emerald Regime Invitational Winter Guard Competition on Saturday, Jan. 29.
The Emerald Regime, with its usual history of tradition and excellence, is the oldest consistently competitive scholastic color guard in the California Color Guard Circuit, the competitive circuit for the Northern California area.
This year’s show promises to be an exciting evening of pageantry with 34 units in competition including the current world champion, Logan High School from Union City. Guards from as far away as San Luis Obispo, Modesto and Benicia, as well as neighboring units from San Jose, Gilroy and San Benito and Santa Cruz will make up the competitive field.
For those new to the activity, color guard refers to the flags and simulated rifles and sabers that are part of a high school or college marching band.
The Emerald Regime Color Guard will perform a show entitled “Traffic.” With costumes and flags designed with the highway stripe and with an exciting stage set with green props and a floor painted to indicate swift movement, the guard will engage in a lively, fast-paced choreographic orchestration of dance, equipment handling and visual stimulation. The music, an original composition by Jim Wunderlich, even includes a morning radio traffic report.
Along with guard captains and seniors, Melanie Hart and Becky Spence, eight other Live Oak students dedicate their time, talent and energy to the success of this organization.
The organization’s success is also guaranteed by the hard work of parent volunteers who not only help with the production but also work behind the scenes at the Emerald Regime Bingo Game, which supports the Live Oak Marching Band and Color Guard. The Bingo Game is held in the Britton Middle School Auditorium every Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.
Local companies also help ensure the success of the unit. This year guard parent, Rene Corona and Trans-Pak, Inc., specialists in packaging, crating and logistics built and donated the props that set the stage for the show.
The Emerald Regime is again sponsoring The Emerald Guard, a unit comprised of 13 students from Britton and Martin Murphy Middle Schools. In their debut season last year, the guard was the CCGC Circuit Champion in the Independent Regional A class and had an undefeated year. This year’s hard working students will perform a show entitled, Ivers – An Irish Violin Extravaganza.
The competition begins at 3:30 p.m. and will conclude at 9:45 p.m. The Emerald Guard competes at 4:12 p.m. and the Emerald Regime competes at 6:36 p.m.
Tickets can be purchased at the door and the event is being held at the Live Oak High School gym.
