CALLER 1: My beef is that the picture you guys have on the sports page of the Live Oak/Palma game in the weekend edition is horrible. You should be supportive of Live Oak instead of having a Palma guy sitting on a Live Oak guy. That’s my beef.
GREEN PHONE: Granted the player in question appeared to be sitting on a Live Oak player in our coverage of Live Oak’s loss to Palma 55-14 last weekend. But really, the photo wasn’t as bad as it seemed. In the shot by photographer Chris Riley, Live Oak’s Victor Kalata was actually sacking Palma’s quarterback. That’s a good thing, right? The Times loves Live Oak and Sobrato and will always do its best to cover them – whether their winning or losing. Go Nuts!
CALLER 2: Hi, um it’s just really unfortunate that you have had no staff coverage over the boys water polo. I mean, week after week it’s the football and the track and pretty much every sport. And the boys water polo, probably in the last six weeks have had maybe one article that was submitted by a parent. And I notice that the football and the track and most of the other sports, they’re not submitted by parents. They are primarily submitted by staff writers and I’m just really saddened that you can’t take pride in the team and a team that’s been No. 1 and they work really hard, probably harder than all these other sports and that you have not taken the time to do any coverage on them and it’s the end of the season. Hopefully, you’ll get the TCALs and the CCS, but again, we haven’t seen any of that. Not their qualifying or the status in the state championships , one of the top eight teams in Northern California, nothing like that. So anyway, I hope you can do that. Thanks a lot.
GREENPHONE: We’re willing to bet all of our student athletes work pretty hard at their sports. Ask Cobbie Jones or Lance Wolfsmith how difficult their race was last weekend and they’ll tell you Bob Dylan style “It ain’t easy.” But that’s not an excuse for lack of coverage of a local team. The Times will have its new sports editor starting next week, but we’ll let her introduce herself. Once she starts, we’ll be able to bring the coverage our readers are used to. The tragic accident involving the sports editor at our sister newspaper, the Hollister Free Lance, has impacted our sports department (see John Coscia’s column). So has operating without a sports editor for the last two months, but we’ve found a great replacement and we’re ready to roll. Parents, fans and coaches are always welcome to meet us halfway and improve our coverage – call us at 779-4106 if you’d like to help.
