DIRTY GEARS SERIES: Thomas moves into first in Event 2

three race Sunday in Event 2 at Santa Teresa County Park
SAN JOSE — Ted Thomas of Morgan Hill grabbed an early lead in the Dirty Gears MTB XC Series by winning the men’s 20-29 division category three race Sunday in Event 2 at Santa Teresa County Park.

Thomas’ winning time of one hour, 21 minutes and three seconds moved him to the top of category three with two events remaining.

He wasn’t the only local winner Sunday. Shannon Devine (1:54:41) raced unopposed in the women’s 29-and-under division of category three and climbed to 18th in the standings.

Brian Cortese (1:48:39) and Paolo Aglony (2:20:13), also of Morgan Hill, finished third and sixth in the men’s 30-39 category two and 20-29 category three races, respectively.

The Dirty Gears Series picks up June 5 at Harvey Bear Ranch.

Each division winner will receive a prize from South Valley Endurance.

Abbott, Pleasant Hill, 1:17:10; men’s 30-39: Doug Baker, San Jose, 1:18:21; men’s 40-49: Jeff Bauermeister, Fairfield, 1:32:32; men’s 40-49 single speed: Joe Carpenter, San Jose, 1:32:32; women’s 29 and under: Lauren Swigart, Campbell, 1:35:34. Category three -– men’s 20-29: Ted Thomas, Morgan Hill, 1:21:03; men’s 30-39: Matt Destro, San Jose, 1:22:12; men’s 30-39 single speed: Luis A.
