Module 1 of the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) “Road I” class, known in the Bay Area bicycle driver education program as “Street Skills For Cyclists,” is a four-hour lecture-and-discussion class. This interactive class includes discussion of crash types and crash avoidance techniques. Students learn their legal rights and duties on the road, how to change lanes, trigger signals, ride at night, and use bimodal transportation such as bike and bus. No bicycle is required for this session. Students receive a copy of the popular book, “Bicycling Street Smarts.”

Module 2 of LAB Road 1 lasts 6-7 hours and includes how to perform a bicycle safety check, do minor repairs, and fix a flat. The course features on-bike practice of three safety maneuvers and riding on streets ranging from residential to multi-lane downtown environments. A working bicycle and helmet are required. Students receive a copy of the LAB “Road 1” class booklet.

Classes are suitable for adults and driving-age teens. Students can take Street Skills by itself, or go on to Road 1 Module 2 for the on-bike class and an opportunity to earn a certificate. Students can take Module 1 and Module 2 from two different instructors at different locations in the Bay area. Module 1 is required to take Module 2.
