Dear Editor,

Articles on the Opinion pages in the March 12 and 15 editions have prompted me to share my views of the recent decisions made regarding the Sobrato High School football team.

It is nice to see that logic and reasoning does work in the educational process.

I would like to thank the administration of Sobrato High School for correcting a mistake, even if the correction was late. Yes, the administration (the principal, athletic director and head football coach) was wrong in their initial request to play in the TCAL. However, I believe the Board of Managers in the TCAL and the athletic directors should harbor some of the responsibility as they voted to accept this decision.

It is my understanding that I am the only parent that came forward with the concerns of playing in the TCAL, not a group of Sobrato parents threatening the school administration as was stated in a previous article. Instead of blaming the administration and Sobrato High School, can’t we stop throwing stones so we can focus on the students and their education? It seems to me that would be the most important priority. Principal Rich Knapp chose to do the right thing, not because of pressure, but because it was in the best interests of the success and safety of the student athletes of Sobrato High School. Yes, safety is the reason.

Live Oak High School has a proud history. Sobrato will grow and establish its academic and athletic traditions as well. I am proud to be the parent of a Sobrato High School student athlete. Coach Jeff Patterson is an excellent educator and football coach, his program does not deserve to be criticized for simply doing what is right. We are fortunate Morgan Hill Unified has two outstanding high schools for our children to attend. I hope we can move forward in a more positive direction and not create animosity between our two high schools. Let’s tend to the present and look to the future.

Michael Perez, parent, educator, coach, former athletic director, Morgan Hill
