The Live Oak Acorns wrestling team captured a third place finish at the Peninsula Wrestling Tournament this weekend, while teammate Mariah Fernandez placed second at the Girls Peninsula Invitational on Friday and earned first place at the Northcoast Girls Classic at Del Mar on Saturday.
“We did real well,” said Live Oak coach Robert Fernandez. “They out-performed all of our expectations and wrestled well. They placed third as a team, which I was completely surprised with.”
The Peninsula Wrestling Tournament is an individual tournament that is a warm-up for the wrestlers to get their season underway. Brett Jones was the first place champion at the 152-weight class for Live Oak, while eight teammates earned medals.
Mitch Haaser, Mike McHenry, Larry Dominguez, Tony Morales, Andrew Stratton, Garrett Webb, Vincent Hatakeyama and Alex Cortez were all medalists for the Acorns.
Mariah wrestled in the Girls Peninsula Tournament on Friday, earning second place with three pins and one loss. Mariah, who was wrestling up one weight class, lost to the nation’s sixth ranked Ivy Bier, who was wrestling up two weight classes.
On Saturday Mariah traveled to Del Mar High School where she took first place at the Northcoast Girls Classic. She was 4-0 in the tournament and won all of her matches by pin. Each match lasted no longer than 35 seconds as she dominated her opponents from the start.
On Wednesday Live Oak heads to San Benito to participate in the Novice Tournament.
“I think we’re going to look pretty strong,” said Fernandez. “It will give us more experience for when league gets underway.”
This weekend the Acorns will be split up again as they participate in three separate tournaments on Saturday. The Lincoln Dual Varsity Tournament is for the bigger, heavy hitters on the Live Oak squad, while other members will participate in the Overfelt TAZ Tournament for freshman and sophomores. Mariah will be representing the Acorns at the San Leandro Girls Tournament.
“This will be the first action for a lot of the wrestlers,” said Fernandez.
Live Oak kicks off action in the Tri County Athletic League on Wednesday, December 14, when it hosts Salinas in a dual meet
