Died surrounded by his family on December 28, 2009.

He was born January 27, 1922 in Carlisle, IN, the only child of Ethel and Byron Hoover. He graduated from Carlisle High School in 1940 and attended Purdue University. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in September 1942 where he served with Company B, 62nd Signal Battalion, providing communication support to the Allied Forces in North Africa and Italy prior to being deployed to the Pacific Theatre. He was discharged in December 1945 as a Staff Sergeant.

In December 1945, he married the love of his life, June Ranger. They were married nearly 52 years until her death in 1997. He worked in the telecommunications industry for his entire career; first for the Indiana Bell Telephone Company and then with Lenkurt Electric Company (later GTE) in San Carlos, CA. In 1961 he was transferred to Lenkurt’s Dallas, TX office. In 1967 he returned to the company’s San Carlos headquarters where he remained until he retired from GTE in 1984. He then joined Dantel-Lac in South San Francisco as Director of Marketing. He and June made retirement permanent in 1988 and moved to Morgan Hill.

He was an avid HO model railroader and spent 10 years constructing a 27′ X 35′ model railroad. He was active in the San Martin Presbyterian Church and the Morgan Hill Masonic Lodge. As a Mason for over 60 years he was honored and humbled when he received the Lodge’s Hiram Award in 2007.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Debra and Linder Jones of Los Gatos and grandchildren Evan Hoover Jones, Gregory Linder Jones and Meredith Anne-Louise Jones.

He looked upon every day as a gift and will be remembered for his deep love of country, family and friends; his abiding good cheer and his ever-present sense of humor.

Private interment. A memorial celebration of his life will be held at the Morgan Hill Masonic Lodge, 380 W. Dunne Avenue, Morgan Hill, CA 95037, Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory be made to the charity of your choice.
