Live Oak High senior Deanna Martin will compete Tuesday against winners from Gilroy and Hollister in the annual Rotary Club speech contest.
Martin, who hopes to enroll at CalPoly San Luis Obispo or San Jose State this fall, tipped Acorn badminton teammate Jennifer Fraissl, also a senior, in competition Wednesday at the Morgan Hill club.
Martin, who also is a member of the Emerald Regime Marching Band, won a $100 check for the top prize on a tie-breaker. Fraissl, who hopes to attend UCLA this fall, collected $50 for her effort.
Other winners were, from Sobrato High, Ana Piatyszek, third; Cecilia Sinohui, fourth; and Isela Banuelos, fifth.
The winner of Tuesday’s contest, hosted by the Gilroy club at the Elk’s Lodge, goes on the regionals in Los Gatos on April 20.
This year’s speech theme was A Century of Building Bridges based on Rotary’s observance of its 100th anniversary this year.
Judges for this year’s Morgan Hill competition were Nancy Lowe, Daphne Kuhar, Marty Cheek and Raju Vyas, all from the local Toastmasters Club
