Dear Editor,

Just the other I had such a good experience with a good Samaritan coming to my rescue that I want to share it with others.

My husband and I have lived in Morgan Hill for almost two years and love it. One recent morning I left home for Gilroy to do some shopping. My first stop was at the Grocery Outlet where I purchased several items.

After putting my bags in the trunk of my car, I proceeded to my next stop, the Kaiser pharmacy, about five minutes away. When I got there I went to grab my purse and found it wasn’t where I always place it in the front seat. In fact, it was nowhere with me. I had left it in a shopping cart at the store.

I immediately returned to the store, searched shopping carts and asked clerks in the store if someone had found a black purse. I had to accept the fact that my purse was gone. One of the clerks gave me change so I could call my husband. I wanted him to start making calls to cancel our credit cards. When he answered our phone I found to my delight that a gentleman named Gerry (not sure if he spells it with a G or J) had found my purse.

Gerry told my husband he was on his way to work at Soledad Prison and since he also lived in Morgan Hill, he would return my purse on his way home from work in the evening.

My husband offered to drive to his home to pick it up, but he said, “No, he’d drop it off.” Well, he did bring it to our home that evening. Gerry turned out to be a genuine gentleman. He didn’t want a reward and was just happy he could help.

It turned out I hadn’t noticed but Gerry was directly behind me at the checkstand. The store has entrances at each side. He told me he had entered the store from the far side but, for some reason, had decided to exit the store at the side where I had parked. He said that when he saw the cart outside with my purse in it, he had the feeling that it belonged to the woman who had preceded him at the checkstand. When he checked my wallet for identification, he saw my driver’s license, recognized my picture and called my home.

We hear of so many terrible things happening to people these days, I wanted to share a good story with others. Gerry, I hope you read this, too, and know how grateful we all are to have you as an example that there still are some honest and caring people like you.
