A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck in a remote area near New Idria late Saturday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake hit at 11:55 p.m. and was centered 12 miles southwest of the largely deserted town in southeastern San Benito County. The earthquake was about 48 miles southeast of Hollister, according to the USGS.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 5.8 miles.
It could be felt as far as Reno to the north, Redlands to the south and to the eastern California border, according to responses on the USGS website.
