A minor earthquake registering 3.7 struck the Morgan Hill and Coyote Valley area Thursday at 2:11 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake, on the Calaveras Fault, was centered six miles north of Morgan Hill in Coyote Valley and 15 miles southeast of San Jose City Hall, at a depth of 4.2 miles.

It was followed by at least one quake of less than 2.0 magnitude.

There were no reports of damage or injury.

Santa Clara County Fire Department Battalion Chief Brad Darbro, based at the El Toro station at the north end of town, said he felt the temblor but the department received no earthquake-related calls.

A check with Morgan Hill police dispatchers showed only calls to see if there had been an earthquake but no one reported problems.

The Charter School of Morgan Hill, now located in the former Encinal Elementary at 9530 Monterey Road in the Coyote Valley, was near the quake’s epicenter.

Director Mary Smathers said there were no injuries and no damage to the school, “just a lot of excited kids.”

Smathers said the students thought it was funny because one of the sixth-grade students had just completed giving a report about the 1906 San Francisco earthquake as part of a research project, and “everyone said he planned this.”
