The Morgan Hill 13-year-old All Stars splits its first two games in the sectional all-star tournament.
The sectional tournament for the Pony Division, which is being played in Los Gatos, kicked off on June 30 with Morgan Hill facing host Los Gatos.
In a hard-fought game, Morgan Hill was doomed by four errors and lost a 7-3 decision.
Brett Fuller pitched five strong innings, striking out nine batters. He also went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Michael Garrett chipped in with a 2-for-3 effort and Tim Giles and Ryan Webb were both 1-for-1.
Morgan Hill responded in its second of the tournament and was clicking on all cylinders in an 11-4 win over San Jose Pacific.
Pitcher Marc Rauschnot was strong, striking out four batters in his three innings of work. Closer Richie Martinez entered in relief of Kevin O’Rourke with a runner on first base in the fourth inning.
He walked the first batter he faced, then pitched the runner off second base for the second out of the inning.
He settled down after that and all his pitches were working as he struck out the next batter to end the inning and went on to record six strike outs in a row.
Morgan Hill ended a late comeback by San Jose in the sixth inning when they had runners on first and third. The runner on first attempted to steal second and the throw down was cut off by shortstop Aaron Wallace. He fired a strike back home to catcher Kyle Dunner, who blocked the plate and tagged out the runner to end San Jose’s threat.
Christian Turland also played well for Morgan Hill as he robbed a base hit in the outfield with the bases loaded that would have cleared the bases and given San Jose the lead.
Garrett reached base three times and scored twice. Fuller nearly hit a home run and also scored twice.
Rauschnot was 2-for-2 and Dunne, O’Rourke, Webb and Ryan Copozza all had a hit.
Martinez was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and he and Giles both layed down two suicide squeezes.
Each player played a crucial role to help Morgan Hill pick up the win.
Morgan Hill advanced to face San Jose PAL on Tuesday morning. A win would have advanced them to face Los Gatos in the afternoon game.
