Well, for whatever reason, the cupboard is just about bare for Toys For Tots in the South Valley this year. This is a really big shame.

Usually the storage room (it’s quite large) is about full, according to Gina Six who is running the program, along with help from U.S. Marines and Capt. Mike Sanders of the Santa Clara County Fire Department. But not this year.

Whether it is because the normally generous South Valley residents have turned into Scrooge or the economy has hit them hard, we don’t know. We do know that, while many people are economic victims, many others are not. Just look at the quality and number of cars, SUVs, RV, vans and trucks in the driveways of our expensive houses.

You don’t really want the needy children who go to school along with luckier and more comfortable kids to find Christmas morning bleak and sad, do you?

Sharing is a fundamental property of The American Way. We have always helped our neighbors and they, in turn, have helped us.

The reason, of course, is because, from the very beginning, the country was founded by immigrants who left extended family and friends behind. You can say the same about California, with the thousands of men following the Gold Rush. Where family is not available to help, neighbors are.

To make matters more embarrassing, Six said that San Jose’s toy collections are about normal – it’s just us.

So, folks, get yourself downtown to Thinker Toys – 10 percent off T4T toys – (Monterey between Second and Third), Target on Cochrane or any other place that sells toys or books. The toys (such as they are) will be distributed on Dec. 22 but T4T needs them now. And they could also use some volunteers on Dec. 22.

Toys don’t have to be expensive. But think of your kids or nieces and nephews waking up to nothing on Christmas morning. Then think of what your family will enjoy. And, if you don’t have the time to shop, a check made out to Toys for Tots, sent to c/o 411 Woodview Ave., Morgan Hill, CA 95037-2800 will work just as well.

How about sharing some holiday spirit with the less fortunate? What else is the holiday season about, anyway?
