As city contractors remove harmful chemicals and demolish a home at 35 East Third St. this week, a portion of the parking lot behind downtown restaurants will remain closed.

The parking lot is between West Second and Third streets, behind Rosy’s at the Beach and Dirty’s Tap & Tacos restaurants. A small portion of the parking lot behind the house, which is owned by the city of Morgan Hill, will be fenced off the remainder of the week. About 17 parking spaces will be unavailable during the demolition.

On Tuesday, the Ferma Corporation began the abatement of asbestos and lead paint that exist inside and outside the home, as well as a garage that sit on the property. Demolition and removal of structure is expected to begin Thursday, according to Morgan Hill Senior Project Manager Jim Dumas.

Cleanup of the site will continue until the end of this week.

The city council authorized the demolition contract at its March 24 meeting, at a cost of $26,365, with an additional $4,000 allowance for possible change orders. The city purchased the quarter-acre lot and its accompanying home and garage from Dwight and Lola Jungkeit in June 2009. It paid $587,500 for the property, and plans to build a parking lot that will hold eight parking spaces.
