A 7th grade male student at Britton Middle School was suspended Wednesday after students in his class observed a pellet gun in his backpack.
“There was no gas container on the gun; however because it resembled a gun, we will proceed with suspension and then investigation of the incident,” Superintendent Carolyn McKennan said Thursday. “We have a zero tolerance policy.”
The 13-year-old San Martin resident was issued a juvenile contact citation and released to his father.
Other students were in no danger at any time during the incident, McKennan said. Morgan Hill Police officers were called to the school, and the student and the pellet gun were removed from the campus.
“On a personal note, this is an exemplary student with no history of discipline problems,” McKennan said. “He appeared not to be cognizant that there could be unknown consequences to this action. It’s very unfortunate for this young man. The gun was inoperable without the canister, but there are no practice drills here.”
The district will continue to investigate the incident.
