Maybe it’s the start of a new football season with all the hopes and dreams that our favorite teams will finally have the right combination of offense and defense that makes them champions. Whatever your motivation may be, I can’t help but notice that more of us add some extra pep to our step come September.

With this extra pep in mind, I encourage us all to take a moment this Fall to think about how we might all make a difference during the next few months. There are a plethora of local activities and opportunities to participate. Just consider the following:

n Volunteer Morgan Hill is holding their 2nd Annual Volunteer Fair Sept. 11.

This is the local premiere opportunity to learn about all of the exciting and meaningful volunteer opportunities available in Morgan Hill. Admission is absolutely free and the first folks to arrive even receive a prize. It takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Community and Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road.

n Coastal Cleanup Day is Sept. 25 at multiple sites in Morgan Hill from 9 a.m. to noon.

Local organized locations include West Little Llagas Creek, Anderson Lake, and Uvas Reservoir. Visit www.cleanacreek.org for complete information about all local sites.

If you just want the short story – come at 9 a.m. Sept. 25 to La Crosse Circle and La Jolla. Bring gloves, water, and sunscreen.

n Stormwater Marking – We have ongoing opportunities for small groups of people to mark our local stormdrains so people understand that trash and other pollutants shouldn’t be dumped into them. It’s fun, easy, and the perfect way to get a little exercise while contributing to the community.

In short, you get a map with an area to cover along with all of the tools and materials needed to make it happen. For more information, contact me at the numbers below.

Special Note to Parents: For most of us, the Fall is definitely the time to build routines for the school year that result in a successful academic year. When building these routines, why not build in a “Making a Difference” component as well? Whether it’s volunteering a set number of hours per month at a local charity, keeping a stretch of creek litter-free, or offering to teach activities to younger kids, our children will benefit from learning to “make a difference” at a young age. Please consider how you might add this element into your family’s routine.

RecycleBank Update: We did it! We recycled diligently, earned our points, and have now received and used our first reward. Last Friday night, my wife and I were treated to a half-price entree at a local restaurant courtesy of the reward we earned through RecycleBank. The process couldn’t have been smoother and it made the meal taste that much better knowing we earned our discount.

I’m now ordering more rewards so we can use them up. Those points accumulate fast! What are you waiting for? Sign up for RecycleBank today at www.RecycleBank.com so you can earn your rewards too.
