Plan to get your passport and a happy birthday to ‘Cakes’ Marie
It’s Wednesday morning as I write, and it’s my middle daughter’s birthday. Her nickname is perfect for the day. Cayla Marie’s “other” name is “Cakes.” I’m really not sure how all that worked out – my oldest, Shannon, is “Pie” and Mariah, the youngest, is “Root Beer.” Nobody else uses those nicknames, it’s a Dad’s special, and the why and how – who knows? So, Happy Birthday across the miles Cakes Marie, your proud Father loves you and wishes every happiness today and always.

A no-shorts vacation to a lovely state
There are lots of sayings having to do with brain power. Sayings like, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” – false – and “You’re never too old to learn something new,” – true.
Residents walk for peaceful streets
There is no doubt that even our generally pleasant South Valley communities are impacted by the presence of juvenile gangs. Morgan Hill, Gilroy and Hollister all suffer from varying degrees of violence, intimidation and graffiti. Perhaps a strategy being used in a neighboring city could help alleviate this situation here.
Crunch Time: Nine innings full of father-son moments
You will have to trust me when I say my dad and I do more things together than watch baseball, but I think some of my favorite memories are doing just that.
Those magical words of spring are about to echo across the country
We’ve all heard the magic words that seem to get our adrenalin flowing a bit faster. Some examples: “THEY’RE OFF”; or, how about “GENTLEMEN. START YOUR ENGINES” (my apologies to Ms. Patrick); or the famous call to action on the food cook-off, “CONTESTANTS, GRAB YOUR POTS;” and who could forget the announcement that the curling competition is about to start with a resounding; “GET OFF THE ICE, STUPID” – or something to that effect. Anyway, the most famous and recognizable announcement of all would have to be, “PLAY BALL.”
Celebrating a local veterinarian
Last Saturday, a large group gathered to celebrate a birthday with one of Gilroy’s finest. Dr. James Ebaugh was one of the city’s first veterinarians, practicing for many years. I was one of the lucky ones to work with Jim after I graduated vet school. During those first years of my career, he helped me understand that veterinary medicine is more than just caring for animals. Dr. Ebaugh combined total dedication to his work with a sense of humor that’s important for survival in this high pressure job.
