The Morgan Hill Toastmasters Club this week received the President’s Distinguished Club recognition for its local activities in public speaking and leadership development in the South Valley region. It is the first time the local club has earned this honor, the highest any Toastmasters club can receive.
The award was presented by Toastmasters International headquarters to the South Valley club for Toastmaster’s year ending June 30, 2010. Club activities included holding a candidates forum for the Santa Clara County District 1 campaign, being involved in producing television shows for Morgan Hill Access TV (cable channel 19 in Morgan Hill), and holding several special leadership workshops such as one on how to listen more effectively.
During the year period, four Morgan Hill Toastmasters earned their Competent Communicator awards, and two earned their Advanced Communicator awards. One club member received an Advanced Leadership award. These achievements helped in receiving the President’s Distinguished Club recognition.
“One reason why the President’s Distinguished Club honor is important to our club is because it demonstrates how we have grown as a leadership and public speaking organization and are able to pull together to accomplish our goals,” said Marty Cheek who served as president of the Morgan Hill Toastmasters during the club’s last year-long period. “We have a fun club full of people interested in professional and personal development, and together we can accomplish anything.”
The Morgan Hill Toastmasters shines in the Bay Area for its involvement in community and personal development, said Jim Carrillo, the club’s current president.
“By focusing on the mission of Toastmasters, which is to help individuals improve at communication and leadership, the local club was recognized by Toastmaster’s International with the highest honor, the President’s Distinguished Award. This is exactly what you would expect from a South Valley organization – a club devoted to excellence.”
The Morgan Hill Toastmasters serves the cities of Morgan Hill, Gilroy, San Martin, Hollister and San Juan Bautista. The club meets 1t 7:30 a.m. every Thursday morning at BookSmart, 80 East 2nd St. Morgan Hill.
