Morgan Hill will mark 111 years of celebrating Independence Day with a rousing and patriotic parade on July 4, an event that has turned into the largest social event in town.

Residents considering entering a float in the parade, whose official theme is “America, My Home Sweet Home,” can sign up for a how-to-workshop on June 11 when parade professionals will reveal what it takes to have a winning entry.

The how-to workshop includes tips on how to be a successful and winning entry, parade rules, safety and parade protocol. Workshop participants will earn bonus points toward their judging category.

Bob and Maureen Hunt, who have organized the July 4th parade for many years, count the parade as a valuable part of American life.

“They (the parades) remind us of our national heritage and help us express our individual feelings of patriotism and thankfulness for the freedoms we have inherited,” said Maureen Hunt.

The Hunts are part of IDI – Independence Day, Inc. – an all-volunteer group that presents the parade and six other events designed for wholesome family entertainment. The parade is sanctioned by the Northern California Parade Judges Association. Applications are available at www.mhparade.com or e-mail your request to [email protected]. The final, late deadline to apply is June 14, with higher fees.

Morgan Hill Parade Workshop: Saturday, June 11, 9:30-11:30am at the YMCA Senior Center, 17666 Crest Ave. To reserve a spot e-mail [email protected] or call 779-3387.

Details: www.mhidi.com or contact the Hunts at [email protected] or 779-3387 ext. 2.
