More than 700 bicycling enthusiasts converged on Specialized Bicycle Components headquarters April 24 for the Bicycling Spring Classic and post-ride festival.
Featuring races of 90, 60 and 25 miles that attracted some top riders from around the world as well as a family-friendly 5-mile ride, the annual cycling extravaganza was once again a success. Six hundred and seventy-eight cyclists competed on various courses throughout the scenic, country roads in Morgan Hill, while other residents, families and friends enjoyed everything host Specialized offered for the active spectators.
Steve McGrath, 45, of Los Gatos finished first overall in the 90-mile race, edging out a pair of Morgan Hill riders in runner up as well as top female Susan Quan, 48, and third-place overall Don Kieutzy, 66. Kieutzy was also the 65-69 age group winner for the route.
Stanford’s Nick Bax, 26, claimed the 90-mile King of the Mountain crown ahead of Concord’s Hanns Detlefsen, 43, in second and Ben Guernsey, 32, of Capitola, in third. Top South County competitors were fourth-place Warren Marshall, 50, of Gilroy, and fifth-place Mike Holt, 46, of Morgan Hill. The first-place female KOM rider was Jill Stone, 51, of Los Gatos.
Gemini Timing provided the race times for all competitors.
In the 60-miler, Morgan Hill riders claimed the top three slots with Shawn Warthen, 48, in first place; Harlan Warthen, 13, in second place; and Slate Olson, 43, in third place. The top female finisher (and fourth overall) was Mary Murphy, 54, of San Jose.
Ned Overend, 61, of Durango, Colorado, won the 60-mile King of the Mountain title in front of runner up Austin McInerny, 49, of Berkeley, and third-place Ken Meagor, 46, of Morgan Hill. The top female rider was Celeste McCartney, 55, of Berkeley.
In the 25-miler, Morgan Hill’s Michael Peterson, 45, finished the fastest, while Aidan Denoyer, 12, took second place and Gilles Denoyer, 45, claimed third place. The top female finisher was Catalina Andaluz-Adams, 28, of Gilroy.
Specialized, which donated $5 for every registration to support Morgan Hill Unified School District, hosted the “Community Zone” with activities including a bike skills course for kids to improve their riding, a bounce house and a chance to connect with community organizations and public service agencies. Specialized employees also gave bicycle tune-ups to visitors.
