An ambulance, three units from the Gilroy Police Department, and one engine and truck from the Gilroy Fire Department responded at 9:30 a.m. to a roadside crash across the street from the Gilroy Presbyterian Church at 6000 Miller Avenue.

According to GPD Cpl. Rosa Quinones, a male around the age of 25 in a silver Ford Mustang collided head-on with a large oak tree while driving southbound on Miller Avenue. A witness estimated the young man was going 35 mph, according to Quinones.

The speed limit in the area is 20 mph.

At the scene, crews attended to the driver before transporting him to Saint Louise Regional Hospital.

Quinones does not know if the driver is a Gilroy resident. She did not observe any visible injuries.

“But that’s a pretty hard impact right there,” Quinones added, glancing at the Mustang. “If anything, it’s going to be internal.”

The entire front end of the car is totaled.

Quinones says GPD does not frequently see accidents or experience speeding issues in the rural area, which is flanked by Mesa Ridge and Santa Teresa Road.

“It’s something he could get cited for, after the investigation,” she said.
