The notion that Measure B of 1999 obligates the Morgan Hill Unified School District (MHUSD) to push full speed ahead in building Sobrato High School at this time is absurd.
June 1999 was a very different time than is March 2003. In June 1999 the local job market was booming. Today we face the reality that 20 percent of the jobs in Santa Clara County have disappeared over the past two years.
In June 1999 Cisco was about to launch major development in Coyote Valley. Today Cisco’s plans are on a deep back burner. In June of 1999 the stock market was booming, electricity was available and cheap, the state and federal budgets showed expected surpluses and our collective heads were in the sand regarding international terrorists.
Much has changed in these past four years, and changed circumstances call for changing actions and responses.
California faces a budget crisis of unprecedented proportions. Enrollment in MHUSD is declining, not increasing as was forecasted by the advocates of Measure B. Pushing full speed ahead to build Sobrato High today is irresponsible given current realities.
If the concern is the will of the voters, then put Measure B up for a re-authorization vote in the here and now.
