Sobrato High School offers various extracurricular activities for its diverse student population. On Sept. 13, students had an opportunity to sign up for a variety of organizations and clubs during Club Day.
Twenty club opportunities at Sobrato include organizations that promote academics, athletics, performing arts, and social issues. Sobrato teachers and some community volunteers advise these clubs.
Interact, a community service club, promotes international understanding and peace. This club is sponsored by the Morgan Hill Rotary Club. The teacher advisors are Tracy Murphy and community volunteer and Rotary member Dan Nuquist.
Mock Trial organizes students to compete in a countywide mock legal trial. Social studies teacher Harold Barnes sponsors this group, but he is advised by a volunteer local attorney.
FFA (Future Farmers of America) develops an awareness of agriculture and promotes leadership skills. Science and agriculture teacher Jennifer Durjava is in charge of this group.
Cooking Club, advised by Beth Pool, introduces new recipes to students working in collaborative groups.
For students interested in bicycling endurance, Bike Club offers socializing and racing opportunities. Scott Stalder, Spanish instructor, leads the group.
Movimiento Estudiantil De Chicano de Azatlan (MEChA), which translated means the Chicano Student Movement in Azatlan, promotes academic achievement and cultural pride for Mexican American students.
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) organizes students to achieve their college goals with guest speakers, field trips, and celebrations. Irma Mendez advises both of these clubs.
Sobrato’s Drama Guild produces two theatrical shows as well as Comedy Sportz improvisation for student performers. The club also sponsors trips to local musicals and is involved in the International Thespian Society. Mark Masoni is the Sobrato performing arts director and sponsors these activities.
Other Sobrato extracurricular possibilities include the Pacific Islander and Asian Student Unity, Amnesty International, California Scholarship Federation, Black Student Union, Gay-Straight Alliance, Harry Potter Club, Speech and Debate, Yearbook, Roller Hockey, Video, Christian Club and Future Business Leaders of America.
In addition to the traditional offerings of athletic competitions, Sobrato students are encouraged to participate in a variety of optional activities. Look for future columns that will feature specific Ann Sobrato High School clubs and organizations.
