Cheers to the senior center and all the programs and activities they provide for area seniors. “The senior center saved my life,” Rachel Contreras, 64, told freelance writer Peggy Thompson. Contreras was depressed, recovering from back surgery when her daughter convinced her to try the center. The pool was the first big plus, as was the Senior Cafe, a nutritional program sponsored by Santa Clara County. “My life changed, I tell you,” she said. “From being a depressed couch potato to struggling … I feel so strong now and there is so much to do; I take a water color class and go to the sewing and quilting classes at the senior center. No more pity parties for Rachel.” That’s one reason of many why the center is a vital part of the Morgan Hill community

Jeers to the Santa Clara Valley Water District and the city of Morgan Hill for even thinking about raising water rates. Due to a decline in consumption, the water district – which sells water to the city which in turn sells it to residents – has proposed a 3.6-percent annual increase this year and has proposed that charge go up to $325 per acre foot by 2020. The water district’s need to increase rates is partially similar to that of the city’s – a double-whammy of a statewide drought that forced water districts, cities and counties to urge water conservation; and a nationwide economic recession that caused all kinds of public revenues to shrink and consumers to cut back – both of which began about three years ago. Perhaps the water district could cut costs instead of increasing rates, and the city could look at increasing rates for heavy users in its tiered pricing system.

Cheers To Live Oak High School senior Rich Martinez for throwing a no-hitter against rival Sobrato. “I was shocked when I heard it over the loudspeaker,” Martinez told Sports Editor Scott Adams. It is reportedly the first such gem thrown by a Live Oak pitcher in 17 years. The 2-0 complete game helped the Acorns (7-13) (4-11) avoid a three-game sweep by the Bulldogs.

Cheers to Mike Johnson, who will be honored Aug. 6 for his exemplary community service and his ability to inspire others to become community leaders themselves. “The (Leadership Morgan Hill Excellence) award recognizes those whose vision and leadership advance the spirit of community and charity; reflect courage and insight; and inspire others to lead in a like manner. And that is a perfect description of Mike Johnson,” said Ken Meagor, Leadership Morgan Hill board chairman. Johnson is the owner of Johnson Lumber Ace Hardware and Johnson Garden Center in Morgan Hill, and Ace Hardware stores in Hollister and Salinas. A 20-year resident of Morgan Hill and from a family steeped in community service, Johnson is a generous supporter of churches, schools, youth sports, scouting and many other nonprofit organizations.
