Waiting in the wings is another private high school for Morgan Hill, as the Diocese of San Jose is exploring the possibility of a Catholic high school in the area. Discussions began several years ago, a site was located and an EIR, or environmental impact report, was completed.

The proposed site was between Monterey and Hale south of Tilton Avenue, less than a mile from the new Sobrato High School.

Plans for the high school were put on hold a year ago; when the diocese said the fundraising climate was not encouraging, with the economic downturn, and there was doubt that there was sufficient population to support the school at that time.

The diocese does not own the site, and nothing official is happening concerning the proposed school, according to Father Gene O’Donnell of St. Catherine Church.

“There is a dedicated group of individuals working to pull together the components for establishing a high school, and there is still an interest there,” O’Donnell said Monday. “We are working with St. Mary’s parish in Gilroy and St. Francis of Assisi parish in Silver Creek.
