When Live Oak hosted Christopher High last season, the Acorns were shorthanded at quarterback as injuries plagued that position. The result wasn’t pretty as the Cougars handed the Acorns a 50-0 drubbing.

Where they lacked last year, the Acorns have Taylor Turnipseed this year. The senior, who missed much of 2011 with a shoulder injury, is coming off of a three-touchdown performance in last week’s 35-21 victory against Gilroy High. Turnipseed and the rest of the Acorns hope to continue to build on that win as they face the Cougars tonight in Gilroy. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

“The kids are hungry and looking to get a little revenge and win number two under their belts,” Live Oak head coach Mike Gemo said Thursday.

The short series between the two programs stands at 1-1. Last year’s lopsided affair, however, is the one that is on repeat in the forefront of Live Oak players’ minds.

“They are definitely an improved team,” Christopher head coach Tim Pierleoni said. “There’s no doubt they are looking forward to playing us.”

Christopher, which lost 22 seniors from last year, will use Sterling Montgomery at quarterback. In his first varsity start last week, the junior set a school record with 304 passing yards in a losing effort against Sobrato.

“They run a similar style offense as Gilroy,” Gemo said. “They run a few more schemes on defense that present a little bit bigger of a challenge for us. But the kids are excited. We are looking to keep the momentum up.”
