Work starts next week on Depot/Church realignment

Construction work is set to begin next week on the realignment of Depot Street at Dunne Avenue, which is part of a larger mixed-use project on tap at the former site of Hale Lumber.

During the construction in the street right-of-way, parking will be temporarily limited at the Community and Cultural Center (CCC). The main entrance to the CCC will be closed on Dunne Avenue across from Church Street, according to City of Morgan Hill staff. The CCC entrance on Depot Street will also be closed during construction.

Construction will begin March 28, and continue through August, according to the city’s website.

The Depot/Church intersection realignment will reroute Depot Street through the CCC parking lot so it will line up with Church Street.

The former site of Hale Lumber—across Depot Street from the CCC—will be developed into a 49-unit residential project after the initial work on the intersection realignment is completed. The Morgan Hill City Council approved the final map for the residential project on Dec. 1, 2021.

The owners of Hale Lumber moved off the property and closed the business in December. Structures formerly on site have been demolished and cleared away, now leaving an empty dirty lot surrounded by construction fencing—pictured above on March 18.

Hale Lumber had been in business at the location since 1946.
