With an explosive extra-inning finish, the Pinto Division Giants captured their second straight Morgan Hill Pony Baseball city title Saturday, beating the Yankees 13-5 at Britton Field.
Although details were not available, the Mets beat the Athletics in a Mustang Division finals game between the regular-season National League and American League champions, respectively. The Mets ended the season with a 14-2 overall record, while the Athletics finished at 12-3-1.
The National League champion Giants (10-6 overall, 7-3 MHPB), a No. 2 seed in the double-elimination city tournament, broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning with a 10-run scoring spree. They sent 15 men to plate and came away with 10 hits, including Ricky Martinez's towering grand slam to left-center field.
It was part of a 3-for-4 batting effort for Martinez, who doubled and drove in four runs. Teammates Christopher Knopf went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and two doubles; and Roman Connolly batted 3 for 4 with two RBIs.
The No. 3-seeded Yankees (11-5, 6-4), winners of the American League, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on D.J. Washington's inside-the-park home run. They pushed ahead 2-0 when Nathan Alejo crossed home in the third, but the Giants had a fourth-inning rally in store. The Giants pulled even on Knopf's two-run double, then went ahead 3-2 on an RBI-single by Connolly.
With their backs against the wall in the fifth and final inning, the Yankees fought valiantly. They forced an extra inning when Gavin Vallez singled in Derek Peterson, who doubled to lead off the inning.
For the Yankees, Vallez finished 2 for 2, Mikey Yamaguma went 2 for 3, and Washington was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs.
