Own Up, Olin Corp. – Take Full Responsibility for Perchlorate Pollution

Dear Editor,

Olin Corp. didn’t think it was “unfeasible” to pollute the water with perchlorate as they went about garnering profits from the fabrication of flares, did they?

I wonder if Olin shared those profits with the general populace?

Garlic, YES! Perchlorate, NO!

Dismayed With County Staff and the Animal Shelter’s Lack of Action

Dear Editor,

For the last year or so, I have been reading with great interest the comments and points Evon Dumesnil has been making, regarding the San Martin County Animal Shelter. I have also read those of Supervisor [Don]Gage, and county staff. It seems to me that Ms. Dumesnil’s concerns are all coming true. Every issue she has stated has arisen, yet her questions have gone unanswered.

In September, I left several messages for the San Martin Animal Shelter head, and FOSMAS to bring their homeless animals to an indoor pet fair, to be held at San Jose’s Mayor Elect Reed’s Community Center, Oct. 22, 2006. I received no reply, or acknowledgment from either party.

It seems to me that, if indeed such difficulties in fundraising, and placing animals is an issue for FOSMAS and our County Shelter, they would have jumped at the opportunity to take me up on my offer to participate in the indoor fair. We had more than 400 people attend that pet fair.

I understand money is tight everywhere. I understand that the County is really struggling to make ends meet.

What I don’t understand is why FOSMAS, and the County Shelter staff is not working with those of us who are expressing concerns about the County’s budget for the Animal Shelter, or attending indoor fairs being offered to them; and why they are leaving Ms. Dumesnil’s valid questions unanswered.

Thank Goodness Local Bars, Restaurants Are Smoke-Free

Dear Editor,

Recently I was having a conversation with a co-worker who had taken a trip to South Dakota and Iowa.

She was telling me about this one truck stop that was very difficult to eat in because it was filled with cigarette smoke.

I shared with her about my boyfriend and I going to Tahoe this past summer and how we were both caught off guard when the hostess at one of the restaurants asked us if we wanted to be seated in the smoking or non-smoking section.

Even though we sat in the non-smoking section, we could still smell the smoke drifting over from the smoking section.

I am truly thankful that all of the bar/restaurants in Santa Clara and San Benito counties are smoke-free.
