Man fails to control dog, who tries to bite police officers
Jul 3, 2008
By Marilyn Dubil - Staff Writer

An alleged assault with a deadly weapon led to a man's arrest early Sunday morning. The assault, according to police, was against their own and the weapon was a dog.

Scott Helf, 22, of Morgan Hill, was booked into Santa Clara County Jail after the 12:30 a.m. incident. According to Morgan Hill police Special Operations Sgt. Jerry Neumayer, officers have responded to numerous calls at the Christine Lynn Drive residence before, and their visit to Helf's home that morning was the second one in a matter of hours. During the first visit, for a report of fireworks being set off, officers gave Helf a warning, Neumayer said. When there was a second call, Sgt. Shane Palsgrove and several other officers went to the residence.

Helf reportedly did not answer the door when officers first knocked, and then he was seen looking out the residence's window. When he did come to the door, Palsgrove told Helf to put away his dog, believed to be a vicious canine. Neumayer said when Helf opened the door, the dog lunged at the officers, and Palsgrove told him to pull the dog back. Helf grabbed the dog's choke chain, but then, according to Neumayer, he smiled and let the dog go. Officers demanded Helf hold the dog back while the dog lunged and bit at Palsgrove, but did not injure him. The dog then turned to the other officers, and Palsgrove grabbed Helf by the arm to force him to control the dog.

Helf was then arrested without incident, Neumayer said.
