Tall grass along Llagas Creek is a fire hazard
Jun 19, 2008

War on Weeds

I live on Easy Street in Morgan Hill. Across the street, along Llagas Creek, is a majorly tall collection of grass. Yearly the city, and once it was the county's responsibility, I believe, used to either disc it or mow it. This year they've cut it back probably 8 or 10 feet from the road but they've left the grass along the creek very high. Approximately five years ago, the house next door to me had a fire on its roof from that along with the grass area across the street at the creek. Everybody in the neighborhood is getting very, very concerned and the city doesn't seem to want to do anything about it. So I'd like to see if you guys can rattle some cages. That's pretty much my story.

Dear Lieutenant Lawn Care,

You're not the only one concerned about tall grass in and around Morgan Hill. With all the fires going on, it's hard not to think of the potential fire hazards close to home. Red Phone contacted Morgan Hill Public Works Supervisor Anne Beale and received this response to your concern: "The city is aware of the fire danger in this season and we are concerned about the tall weeds on Easy Street. The city contracts with Santa Clara County to perform weed abatement on city-owned parcels such as those in the Jackson Oaks open space as well as the property near the resident's home on Easy Street. The county is currently working on weed abatement on city parcels and the coordinator reports that he will have weed abatement on Easy Street completed in the next two weeks."

Unruly undergrowth

You were looking for land in Morgan Hill that needs to be cleaned up? There's a lot on Peak Avenue, almost a block from Main Avenue North, and the lot is full of weeds and grass that are almost waist high. It needs to be cut down. It's ugly looking. It's the house that has burned downed two years ago and no one has taken care of the yard since ... or the property on there.

Dear Wary Witness,

Tall grass got you worried, too, huh? Unfortunately, that particular location is a private parcel. With that being said, weed abatement is the property owner's responsibility. To report tall weeds on private property, call the Santa Clara County weed abatement line at (408) 282-3145 with as precise a location as possible. The county will contact the owner to get the weed clearing work completed.

Residence rearrangement?

Will they be removing the homes on East Third Street on the north side of the roadway when they install the new promenade? There's about four homes there. I just wondered if they were going to be taking those out or leaving them there when they reconfigure that area.

Dear Home Preservationist,

With all the construction noise from the East Third Street Promenade Project, Red Phone wouldn't be surprised if an aircraft carrier was being built at the location in question. Karl Bjarke, deputy director of Public Works told us, however, that there will be no homes removed as part of the project.
